To make the most of a closet, Ms. Spanos suggested taking stock of everything you need to store and then outfitting the interior with a system that gives everything its place.
Ms. Spanos often uses Elfa products from the Container Store, which are adjustable, so the components can be repositioned as needed.
In a compact bedroom in a Houston apartment, Ms. Spanos combined two inadequate closets to create a single storage space running across the wall, concealing it with sliding antique Chinese screens that double as a decorative feature.
“Then we used an Elfa system inside that closet to really maximize the space,” she said.
